Remembered Today:

Ulster Tower, Thiepval

I visited the Ulster Tower in October of 2019. I met the fellow living there, I believe his name was Austin. Does anyone know his last name and is there a way to contact him?

Thanks,

Gene

I hope that you have managed to make contact with the man. We visited the Tower about a year previously, and spoke to a young man curating who I believe was living on site. He had certainly covered previous seasons, though I don't know whether he would have been there in October 2019. I also don't know his name, but we spoke much about his grandfather, Walter Aiken, who was with the 16th (Irish) Division, and who died on 9 September 1916, the same day as my grandfather was seriously wounded at Guillemont; presumably the man's grandfather is this man https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/772853/WALTER AIKEN/

Hello “Proxy “

I haven’t received a reply from the association as of yet.

Thank you for relaying the information about your grandfather.

The fellow at the tower had interesting stories about long nights in the living quarters of the tower without electricity, howling winds, and no company!

Maybe I will receive a reply soon.
