Mates,

Sorry about this but I am having trouble finding any bio details on the former CofS of the 4th Ottoman Army during 1914-15

Falkenberg Werner von     Maj (LtCol)     Deutsche Militär-Mission Türkei - CofS Ottoman 4th Army 8-14    1914-18    shown Generalstab (Staff officer)(not identified)? shown in Klaus Wolf's Book

His name is mentioned in a number of books, but no other details how a Maj just disappears after 1915?

Is there more to his name I am not seeing?

Any ideas?

I would guess that the "von Falkenburg" came with his later purchase of the castle of that name

see this in the Wiki already ref above - In the 1930s, Schulenburg acquired the Burg Falkenberg, a castle in the Upper Palatinate. He had it converted and renovated to serve as a home for his retirement. This monumental work was undertaken between 1936 and 1939.

There is a Werner von Falkenberg in the ERL recorded as a reactivated retired Oberstleutnant who‘s commission was held in IR14. His last position was with Landsturm Infanterie-Bataillon Oberlahnstein XIII/3. He died on 23.03.1924.

Charlie,

It would certainly be better if we could find someone using the correct name in 1915:

can you tie your chap in with the Ottoman army in that year?

regards

Michael

The officer Steve's looking for is Werner Ernst Viktor Egbert von Frankenberg und Proschlitz (1868 - 1933).

von Frankenberg (Ottoman colonel at the time) was CoS of 4th Army during the First Raid on Suez Canal. As far as I know, he returned to Germany in 1915 and came back as commander of "Pasha II" under the Yildirim Army Group in 1917. I'll edit the post when I remember my source.

His correct name helps immensely. The ERL records him as a reactivated Rittmeister, commission held in Kürassier Regiment 2 and last appointment was with Reserve Kavallerie Abteilung 261.

The details I am seeing shows him in the Infantry not Cavalry, I can find no details other then him CofS 12th Saxon Res Corps on the Western Front 1916 awarded Saxon Military Order of St. Heinrich till moving to Palestine in Aug 1917 (Wikipeadia)

No mention of his service in 1914/15 or how he made Gen-Maj

Cheers

In Jemal Pasha's 'Memoirs' he has the following:-

“Such was the general situation of the 4th Army at the end of February, 1915.

I gave von Frankenberg, Chief of Staff of the Army, a careful plan I had drawn up, dealing with the troops striking force and reserves, the materiel, the quantity and natures of the ammunition required for the second Canal Expedition, and sent him to Constantinople. The Turkish General Staff accepted my plan in its entirety, but when I demanded for this important campaign a number of artillery formations and German specialist troops, they sent it on by Frankenberg to the German General Staff with a view to obtaining the sanction of the latter.”

The date is not clear at all but it seems to be soon after February 1915 that von Frankenburg drops out of this part of Jemal's account and is replaced by Col Ali Fuad Bey
