Phil Hollington Posted 21 November , 2020 Share Posted 21 November , 2020 I wonder if anyone can identify the woman’s uniform in this old family photo please? It was taken in Glasgow WW1 and we think it is one of my father’s aunts, at least one of which served as a nurse in France at some point. many thanks in advance Phil
FROGSMILE Posted 21 November , 2020 Share Posted 21 November , 2020 (edited) The lady is dressed in the single breasted ‘outdoors’ version of the dark blue uniform of the British Red Cross VAD “general duties” (i.e. administrative) branch. Unfortunately her shoulder title isn’t clear enough to discern the unit, but it’s most probably for City of Glasgow. The VAD also had St John Ambulance Brigade personnel who carried out exactly similar roles, but who wore a double breasted black uniform to contrast with their Red Cross colleagues.
