Terry Wallace Posted 18 November , 2020 Share Posted 18 November , 2020 Good morning. I am new to the group and I am in Canada. I am looking for any information that I can get on a nurse E.G.BAGNALL with QAIMNSR. I have her MIC and confirmation sheets for the 1914-15 Star, War & Victory medals. I can not seem to find anything further about her service. There is a Canadian Nurse with the same name and initials and wondering if it is the same person! Can anyone help me out with a date of birth or anything else would be great. I am always on the look out for any medals or named photos to Canadian Nurses ( any era). Thanks in advance Terry
Acknown Posted 18 November , 2020 Share Posted 18 November , 2020 (edited) There's a Sister E G Bagnall on Ancestry - Fold3, which I don't have. If you have Ancestry: click here. I spent some time sifting through the British Military Lists on the National Library of Scotland website: https://digital.nls.uk/british-military-lists/archive/88735803, but gave up after several pages.. I did, however, find Sister E G Bagnall within the Canadian lists. Addition: And I forgot to say 'Welcome to the Forum'! I'm sure a medical expert will take this up in due course. Guest Posted 18 November , 2020 Share Posted 18 November , 2020 The Canadian archives have a digitised file for Sister Edith Gertrude Bagnall, who served in both England and France. She is listed as Canadian Army Medical Corps and I cannot see any ref. to QA. She was actually American. Although she served at various non-Canadian hospitals-eg a NZ one- I am not sure she is the same person that you want.

alf mcm Posted 18 November , 2020 Share Posted 18 November , 2020 (edited) She was apparently born on 4th June 1891, in Brooklyn according to this source;- https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBM%2FLIVES%2F5553489 The date of birth appears to come from this source, which does not mention her middle name, so may not be accurate. http://www.tributes.com/obituary/show/11147923 This record does however confirm the date of birth is correct;- https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=TNA%2FBT27%2F1828000089%2F00183 Regards, Alf McM Edited 18 November , 2020 by alf mcm source added, then another source added
Terry Wallace Posted 18 November , 2020 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2020 That is the record from Canada. I am trying to get the birthday of the Nurse that is shown with service with QAIMNSR. I have the full file of the Canadian Nurse. The problem is the Canadian (born in the US Attested on July 19, 1916, sailed to England on September 10, 1916 and the records show her as receiving the War & Victory Medals. The nurse with same initials with QAIMNSR disembarked in France 09-11-1915. So did the nurse from England leave and re-enlist in Canada?
Marilyne Posted 19 November , 2020 Share Posted 19 November , 2020 Welcome Terry, I don't have the time to go deeper into the files, but EDITH (from Brooklyn) served in England and France, at Nb1 Canadian General and Nb 24 GH in Etaples and the letter she wrote obviously talks about the bombing of Etaples (thanks for that, that is one more source for me) ... She probably then knew some of the nurses and personnel who died in Etaples. ELIZABETH disembarked in 1914 in Alexandria and had a couple of bouts of Malaria, after which she seems to have been invalidated to South Africa. I'd have to download to records to read them completely through... concerning Canadian nurses: there were quite a few that did not find a place in the beginning of the war with Canadian units, They were quickly filled and matrons took only the best. Lots of Canadian women took a leap of faith and travelled to England on their own money to enlist with the British nursing units. But they quickly got disenchanted because they were seen as the "nurses from the colonies" and just did not belong. That is why lots asked to leave again after a period and asked to re-enlist with the Canadians. Also more money, more privileges. M.
Terry Wallace Posted 19 November , 2020 Author Share Posted 19 November , 2020 Thank you. Where do you get all of the information. I have the full Canadian file, but find that the British information is lacking. Sorry to be a pest. Terry
Marilyne Posted 19 November , 2020 Share Posted 19 November , 2020 (edited) Terry, I spent the last two years researching all the women who died on the Western front and lay buried there. Am far from done but have to shelve the project for the moment as I'm following a rather important course this year. Let me get back to you with proper references tomorrow or this WE... I'm still in the middle of lectures right now. M. PS: the thread on my research is here: https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/265384-women-buried-on-the-western-front-a-complete-overview/page/8/?tab=comments#comment-2949934 Edited 19 November , 2020 by Marilyne
