Remembered Today:

1908 Pattern Walking Out Belt

I don’t know if this is a GW period item as it is undated, but I thought I’d put it on here. It’s a ‘walking out’ belt made purely for show as it has no back buckles to attach it to the rest of the 1908 Pattern equipment. They are mentioned on Karkeeweb and presumed to be a private purchase item, but otherwise not much is known about them. Does anyone else have an example?

One of these?

It's got a clear MEC mark and 1916 date and marked '"1st C.V.R". I got it over 20 years ago and there were a few exactly like it knocking around.

I've never been able to trace what CVR is. I've just re-googled it and it's just coming up with Covid 19 references!

A couple more pics to follow.

Could the 'VR' be volunteer reserve?

Thanks for the pictures. I have a vague hunch from the build quality that my belt might be Indian. It’s not of MECo quality.

PS. CVR = Caernarfonshire Volunteer Regiment?

At least our guesses agree on volunteer.

Greetings from the hide-out.

I bought three of the 1st C V R belts about 30 years ago and still have them . Mine had 08 pattern frogs on them also in mint condition.

However they were not fitted with the haft carrier straps .  I was told that they were from the CUMBERLAND VOLUNTEER REGIMENT.

No proof of this though.

And I came across these photos of a belt special also marked 1st cvr, but this could easily be reenactor modified tbh.

Indeed yes, I’ve seen at least one other 1 CVR 1916 belt used as a donor for a Belt, Waist, Special ‘conversion’.
This one given away by the position of the 1-inch buckled chapes which are too high up, and possibly the reinforcing rivets which look to be copper rather than brass - hard to tell as they are heavily verdigris(ed).
Comparison with a genuine example below.

Agreed the stitching on the chapes on the bottom one is not as per an original either looks at the stitch line compared to the rivets.

i won’t be modifying mine, I think it’s quite nice, and will now look out for a VTC service dress tunic To go with it :D
