Ivor Anderson Posted 21 February , 2023 Share Posted 21 February , 2023 Thanks to James Brown on another GWF thread we know that the 1/5th RSF companies were recruited from the following areas: The 1/4th (TF) Battalion had its headquarters in Kilmarnock, and the Companies were from the villages of the Kilmarnock area, Galston, Newmilns, Kilmarnock, Darvel, Kilwinning etc. The 1/5th (TF) Battalion had it's headquarters in Ayr and the Companies were again made up from the villages of the surrounding area. Like Troon, Ayr, Maybole, Catrine etc. I have a record of the comapanies from the 1/5th and the nicknames they had for one another. Here ye go!! “A” Co.— Ayr Jockeys. “B” Co.— Catrine Weavers. “C” Co.— Maybole Spriggers. “D” Co.— Stranraer Drovers. “E” Co.— Cumnock Coal Squad. “F” Co.— Troon Black Squad. “G” Co.— Muirkirk Howkers. “H” Co.— Dalmellington Mountaineers. (Rankinston, Ochiltree, Patna. Waterside, Lethanhill and Benqwhat) in this Company.
Ivor Anderson Posted 21 February , 2023 Share Posted 21 February , 2023 (edited) James Nimmo 9328/241155 entered the Balkans war theatre on 23 October 1915 (the same day as Hamilton Campbell 241159) presumably after significant training. We have seen (from his surviving service record) that 9329/241156 McPherson - enlisted 8.6.1915. Campbell enlisted 10.6.1915 (SWB). Both Campbell & McPherson were from Ayr. James Nimmo must have enlisted c.7th June 1915. McPherson only sailed from Devonport, England on 5 Sept 1916.
