I am interested in Private Daniel Connolly number 9876, Royal Fusiliers (City of London) 8 Bn who died 7 Oct 1916.  Commemorated at THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.   I’ve checked for war diary at NA but it does not appear available.  Can someone please tell me where and what action he was killed in please.

Regards

Here's the link to the War Diary at the National Archive that covers that period:-

Also official regimental history can be read \ downloaded here

They were part of 36th Brigade, 12th Division.

Gueudecourt

12th Div attacked Bayonet Trench and Rainbow Trench in this area. Despite a German MG barrage on the front line at Zero Hour, 8th and 9th Bns, Royal Fusiliers and 6th Buffs made it to their objectives. Later they were forced back.

Hope that gets you started,
