Guest furey1918 Posted 25 February , 2005 Share Posted 25 February , 2005 (edited) Hi , I am trying to find out about my great grandfather's military career. The only thing I know for sure is that on my grandfathers birth certificate he lists his occupation as " ex-Sargeant Middlesex Regiment " His name was John Vincent Furey and I am hoping that there is someone out there who can assist me in finding out more info. Any assistance would be VERY gratefully recieved. Regards Ozzie Borne ( 25 Feb 2005 ) family_jungle@yahoo.com.au Ozzie, Have merged your 2 postings and changed the header to enable easier searching Peter Beckett, Moderators PS Where in Oz are you located? Blackblue Posted 25 February , 2005 Share Posted 25 February , 2005 Hi Ozzie, You can download his Medal Index Card here: http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchive...1&resultcount=9 This will advise you what medals he was awarded and probably other information. I suggest you post a copy here and people will be able to help. Research you can do to trace your man is outlined here. Have a look at Research and Grandad's War. A lot of WW1 service papers were destroyed in WW2 (about 60%) but his may still be held at National Archives which will require a manual search in London: http://www.1914-1918.net/ You can read about the 5th Manchesters here: http://www.1914-1918.net/mancs.htm The 5th battalion was a territorial battalion. They expanded the original battalion to two battalions during the war. Being the 1/5th Battalion and the 2/5th Battalion. The 1/5th were in the 42nd Division (same as the one my grandad spent most of 1918 with). Rgds Tim (Fellow Ozzie)
Paul Reed Posted 25 February , 2005 Share Posted 25 February , 2005 The MIC index shows him as Middlesex Regiment, not Manchesters. It's a curious one, as the 5th Battalion did not serve overseas in WW1 - they were a Reserve Battalion. By his number I would say he was a Kitchener's Army man, or he is a regular and his 'L' prefix is missing.
Chris_Baker Posted 25 February , 2005 Share Posted 25 February , 2005 By coincidence, another Furey (Michael Furey) is among the soldiers stories in the Ordinary Heroes on The Long, Long Trail.
