Royal Engineers Inland Water Transport and Palestine

I am writing a biography on Sergeant Issy Smith VC. In 1916 he served with the 1st Manchesters in Mesopotamia before joining the RE IWT, where I understand he was later sent to Palestine. I have learned a great deal about IWT in Mesopotamia, but are yet to find any details of the role IWT played in Palestine. Can anyone advise or point me to any history I could read on this?

The first possibility which springs to mind is that he served on the Dead Sea

Thank you, Michaeldr. This is very interesting. His service record says nothing about his role, only the period he was with IWT. He later advised that after the Fall of Jerusalem, he was attached to G.S.I General Allenby's Headquarters. Do you know of any other possible roles IWT played in Palestine?
