stevenbecker Posted 6 October , 2020 Share Posted 6 October , 2020 (edited) Mates, I notice this man give by the AWM Rubitschung Otto Wilhelm Anton VzWachtmeister Dr Medical Cav /702nd Bn - Cav Troop (zug) - Infanterie-Bataillon 702 post war finish mediacl traing and to Doctor 1917-18 (1894 at Pforzheim Karlsruhe died 1967) vermißt MIA possibly PoW reported WIA 14-7-18 & PoW 14-7-18 by Maj Dick 3rd ALH Regt at Abu Tellul one of 10 German officers and 348 German other ranks captured by 1st ALH Bde awarded EK II & EK I Now I checked my records, but couldn't find the names of these Ten officers or the 348 soldiers? I lot has been written about this battle, but the German names are missing from the records? Most of the died from this battle I have, are from 4Co/Res. Jäg. Batl. 11, and a small number from Infanterie-Bataillon 703 including the Bn Commander. Most of the 10 - 348 must be from the 703rd Bn, but so far none way to confirm who they are? Any ideas S.B Edited 6 October , 2020 by stevebecker

charlie2 Posted 7 October , 2020 Share Posted 7 October , 2020 Starting at record 42083 in the RC files https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/List/2596551/901/42083/ there are about ten pages which are showing, among others, PoWs captured on 14.7.1918. Jan beat me to it. Charlie
Guest Posted 7 October , 2020 Share Posted 7 October , 2020 (edited) Mates, What can I say, but thank you very much. There's enough there to keep me busy for a while, the one good thing about Corvid. If you were close I'd buy you a beer Cheers S.B PS Sorry but what does the Rank shown as "Gem"? Most German ranks have problems, but so many are shown as Gem or "I" These had me beat any ideas? Guest Posted 8 October , 2020 Share Posted 8 October , 2020 Mate, Funny the records show these as well as there other Ranks like Msk - Musketier, J - Jäger, Sch - Schütze, and also Pte Then what about KKtr Ert Rt F possibly Feldw Ert Cheers S.B
charlie2 Posted 9 October , 2020 Share Posted 9 October , 2020 KKtr Ert = Krankenträger Ersatzrekrut - Stretcherbearer Ersatzrekrut (see below) Rt = Reiter - Cavalryman F = Füsilier - Fusilier Ert = Ersatzrekrut - I don‘t think there is a British equivalent. An Ersatzrekrut was someone liable for compulsory military service who had not, for whatever reason, undergone basic training with the rest of his year but had then been called up when the Ersatzreserve was mobilised. I stand to be corrected by one of the more knowledgable pals. Charlie
Guest Posted 9 October , 2020 Share Posted 9 October , 2020 Charlie, Mate you are really good at this. I tried to find other dates for PoWs in 1916 and 1917 in Egypt & Palestine, can you point me in the right direction to look for the names Thanks for the details S.B
charlie2 Posted 10 October , 2020 Share Posted 10 October , 2020 There is no easy foolproof way of finding them all. If you have the names, a search in the RC files should produce the dates of capture. https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Search If you don‘t have their names the casualty lists can also be searched by unit (example attached) and then cross reference the names in the RC files. http://des.genealogy.net/eingabe-verlustlisten/search you need to be aware that no units are given in the casualty lists from the end of 1916 till the end of the war. If you are lucky cross referencing the names in the casualty lists with the RC files will lead to a list with several name (scroll up and down to find the beginning and the end), on the other hand he might be the only one on the list. Sometimes PoWs are listed in the post war lists of the missing http://des.genealogy.net/wk1vermisste/search/index Hope this helps, if not I‘m happy to help you further. Guest Posted 10 October , 2020 Share Posted 10 October , 2020 (edited) Charlie, Yes thanks mate I have the Verlustlisten 1. Weltkrieg and check where I can for names and units. I am looking at a number of battles by the ALH at some of these battles where numbers of prisoners were taken, but names and total number appear to have been confused? Like at Rafa a number were taken around there 9th Jan 1917, who I can't find? Becke H. Lt Deutsche Maschinengewehr-Abteilung der Heersgruppe F possibly OC 603rd or 608th MG Co? 601-608 Makinali tüfek bölüklerinde (601-608 In the machine gun division) 1916-17 possibly PoW 9-1-17 outside Rafa (not identifed)? Another area was at Romani around 4th Aug 1916 Accounts say that the German 605th MGK was captured around there? Records show the commander, and his company of around 24+ men (including the Company War diary) were taken, or from what German records show as 601/08 companies or as most Ottoman and personal German records show as 601st MG Bn Here are the names from all records I have found which shows most of those casualties; Benkwitz von Lt Deutsche Maschinengewehr-Abteilung der Heersgruppe F 605th MG Co 1916- PoW 4-8-16 at Romani (Co strength 1 officer 24 NCO & men 74 Turks) + 21 Arabs 10 horses 52 camels for Romani operations (not identifed)?
