stevenbecker Posted 4 October , 2020 Share Posted 4 October , 2020 (edited) Mates, I can't find who these men are? They are shown in Erickson in "Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign" page 179 Col von Bercut LtCol Klemet Maj Kutes Erickson said they were specialists in the latest British tactics from the Western Front There not shown on any sources I have on the German Army (not even Wolf), can you find who they are? Cheers S.B Edited 4 October , 2020 by stevebecker
The Prussian Posted 4 October , 2020 Share Posted 4 October , 2020 (edited) Hi Steve! I just checked the book from Liman v. Sanders (Fünf Jahre Türkei). The book is available in english: https://www.amazon.de/Five-Years-Turkey-Liman-Sanders/dp/184574215X He writes: "Tecnical troops should be sent from Germany". The officers were: Oberst v. Berendt Oberstleutnant Klehmet Major Lothes Here we go! Oberst v. Berendt, in peacetime commander of Garde-Fußartillerie-Regiment, latest duty commander of 29th Inf.Div., later General der Artillerie he wrote the regimental history of 1st Garde-Fußartillerie-Regiment https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_von_Berendt_(General,_1865) Oberstleutnant Klehmet, in peacetime commander Pionier-Bataillon 16, latest duty in service of General der Pioniere 3, later Oberst a.D. Major Lothes, in peacetime in Ingenieur- und Pionier-Abteilung of the ministry of war, off duty 1914, reactivated Major a.D. from Württemberg, commander of Minenwerfer-Bataillon 1, wounded June 1, 1916 near Bezonvaux, died June 18, 1916 in Pierrepont So, Erickson just misspelled the names... michaeldr Posted 4 October , 2020 Share Posted 4 October , 2020 All Erickson's footnotes for this section suggest that he was working from the Turkish official history at this stage (see p.254) In view of the remarks above, these are most probably Ottoman/Turkish versions of European names and will therefore not correspond exactly
The Prussian Posted 4 October , 2020 Share Posted 4 October , 2020 Hi Michael! You´re right. Either Erickson misspelled the names or he had just wrong informations. But it doesn´t matter... because you´ve got me... (see #2)
michaeldr Posted 4 October , 2020 Share Posted 4 October , 2020 Glad to hear that you've sorted this one By the way, it's not just the Ottoman/Turkish records and histories which have this problem. Recently a friend pointed out the names of a couple of generals who appeared in a French record: Simplon and Beakee. They turn out to be one Brigadier of artillery, Simpson-Baikie Regards Michael
The Prussian Posted 4 October , 2020 Share Posted 4 October , 2020 Yes that´s a problem we don´ t have only in foreign records... Inside of german records (prussian, saxon, bavarian) the same mistakes are well-known...
Guest Posted 4 October , 2020 Share Posted 4 October , 2020 Mates, Thanks yes I have that problem also. I had Berendt Richard, but had him as Artillery Maj in Canakkale'de Aegean 5th Army Artillery units under Gressman 11-15 awarded Ottoman Gold Liakat Medal with swords and Silver Imtiaz Medal with swords and War Medal So I can correct von Bercut and the other two? I wonder how Wolf missed them? Cheers S.B
The Prussian Posted 5 October , 2020 Share Posted 5 October , 2020 (edited) Hi Steve! Yes, you can correct them. Well, I don´t know why Wolf did not mention them. Kannengießer didn´t do either. Probably they were not members of the Militärmission and not officers in turkish staff positions. Wolf writes about the battles of Gallipoli in spring and summer 1915. "Our" three officers came in November 1915! Edited 5 October , 2020 by The Prussian
