Guest Hermen Posted 24 February , 2005 Share Posted 24 February , 2005 After quite some research, I have come to the conclusion that my grandfather from Irish origin living in Lancashire served in the 8th (service) battallion Black Watch/9th (Scottish) division. All I know is that he served as a batman to a colonel (?) who after the war went to India or South Africa and wanted my grandfather to accompany him (who didn’t go). I have picture of my grandfather in uniform, with one button black in memory of his sister who had drowned trying to swim across a lake. I am curious to find out if anyone has pictures of this battalion or division. Also, I assume there is a war diary; how does one obtain a copy. And does anybody know of books related to this battalion or division?
Paul Nixon Posted 24 February , 2005 Share Posted 24 February , 2005 You can buy a re-print of the divisional history (hardback or paperback) from The Naval and Military Press. The National Archive in London should have diaries for the battalion, brigade and division which you could view and copy. There may also be a copy of the battalion war diary (and other related books) at the relevant regimental museum. Paul
