Steve1871 Posted 26 September , 2020 Share Posted 26 September , 2020 The Great War - July 1, 1916, The first Day of the Battle of the Somme - an Illustrated Panorama Very simple, it is a single sheet , folded into 24 pages of pen and Ink drawings of the first full day, of the Battle of the Somme, July 1 , 1916. Each page shows the British/ U.K., forces preparing, advancing and fighting with the horrendous bombardments they endured. Each page is followed in order in time line. Original art work, there is an 18 page long booklet titled “Authors note” where the Arthur, also artist, gives a little background on himself and how the Great War Fascinated him. The first day of the Somme would draw anyone’s attention and curiosity. He tells how he researched that day to do this project. I do not know how many of these Panorama books were printed, but contains the book “ Box”. The panorama/ 24 pages with book “ ends” being hard back boards. The booklet,16 pages describing everything. A one page advert and an envelope with a signed paper book plate

mandy hall Posted 27 September , 2020 Share Posted 27 September , 2020 Hi Steve The drawings from this book are used around the walls of the museum, behind The Thiepval Memorial visitor center. The book was for sale at the memorial and from what I remember was quite expensive. I will see if I can find a photo. Mandy

The Scorer Posted 28 September , 2020 Share Posted 28 September , 2020 I have a copy of the "On The Great War" publication, which is subtitled "July 1, 1916" by Adam Hochschild" and "The Great War Annotated by Joe Sacco". It's the Blue version as in the lower part of the original post. For some reason, I thought that I'd bought it at "In Flanders' Fields", but that can't be right, so I must have bought it at the Thiepval Visitor Centre. My copy is dated 2013, so I guess that I must have bought it that year (October) or in September 2014. I don't remember the cost, although I don't think that it was that expensive - if it had been, I'd probably not have bought it! It's very good, though, and well worth having. I did think that I'd taken some images of the display at Thiepval, but I can't find them as the moment. The image shown above does ring some bells, though.
