Holger Kotthaus Posted 12 September , 2020 Share Posted 12 September , 2020 Military Maps 1915/16 from GEA online Under the link below, on pages 2 + 3, British military maps in a scale of 1: 300,000 from 1915 and 1916 are listed, which are based on the pre-war colonial maps with German names and partly with German explanations. The 29 maps (Rwanda + Urundi are missing; others are duplicated) have been scanned in with a high resolution and therefore good quality, with an average of 6200 x 5200 pixels. In my opinion, in better quality than the reprints of the Colonial Atlas available for sale today. http://www.digitalcollections.lib.uct.ac.za/military-maps?page=1&display=list (Starting from the top left, ending to the bottom right.) Holger Kotthaus Posted 13 September , 2020 Author Share Posted 13 September , 2020 @ Sepoy The large number of these many old names is fascinating. What a kind of work! Nowadays in Tanzania it is very rare to find such names from the past only in very remote areas; - such as: Kilosa Kwa Mpepo https://www.google.de/maps/place/Kilosa+kwa+Mpepo,+Tansania/@-9.1859552,36.008555,5137m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x18f8d679c5cf615f:0x1313616eff61c438!8m2!3d-9.188799!4d36.005852 Kambi Katoto https://www.google.de/maps/place/Kambi+Katoto,+Tansania/@-7.2315497,33.4931517,2176m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x19ac48995600272b:0xd0a8d1736e28bdc0!8m2!3d-7.2320692!4d33.4978984 Likuyudeke Maganga http://wikimapia.org/#lang=de&lat=-10.318487&lon=36.272006&z=16&m=b @ Maureen Very good idea; - many thanks; - “Information that is not shared is lost” Thanks also for the reference to the page; - I did not know this summary. To complete the general maps for the campaign in GEA, only Rwanda and Burundi are missing. According to my information there are such originals in the Belgian archive of the Congo Museum in Tervuren near Brussels. Since the archive is now also set to English, this would make it much easier to inspect files. THE AFRICAMUSEUM ENSURES YOU A SAFE VISIT: https://www.africamuseum.be/en Currently I work for Ruanda and Burundi with the old US Military maps from 1942 which are clearly based on the original Belgian maps from 1916 - 1934. http://legacy.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/ruanda-urundi/ Maps for Portuguese East Africa should still be also available?!? Any idea? Cheers Holger

Holger Kotthaus Posted 14 September , 2020 Author Share Posted 14 September , 2020 Thanks for the link; - I'll go through the archive offer in peace. Regarding a further map for GEA I will send you message. Cheers Holger
