Moonraker Posted 9 September , 2020 Share Posted 9 September , 2020 We have a number of threads about the "Old Contemptibles" (Google "Great War Forum Old Contemptibles") and somewhere among them will be discussion about the origin of the description. And using the GWF search box gives 538 hits! I'm pushed for time today, so can't dig out links to the more appropriate, but other members may be able to. See also here. Do these Units till use this title today? ‘Old Contemptible's’ (note spelling), was the name associated with the members of Sir John French’s British Expeditionary Force - the original 100,000 British Army regulars who landed in France in August 1914. It’s the name of the post war veterans group, not the units they served in. Plenty to find written about them on the internet.
