Remembered Today:

German Cemetery, Barleux

Hello All,

Does anyone have any information on the German Cemetery at Barleux in 1918 please?

A few AIF men KIA at Peronne on 2 Sep 18 were buried here and later concentrated into Assevillers. Wondered if anyone knew how many German burials here and how large the cemetery was?

I have the brief information on Barleux from the Assevillers profile on CWGC site.

Hi Tim,

Just as an aside.  Do you know whether the book on the 26th Bn 1st AIF was ever published?

I've come across references to it (in posts dated 10 years ago), but I don't think anything was published.  Am I right?

Regards,

Jay.

Not by me sorry mate, it was actually my PhD focus and a book was intended but I changed jobs and had to shelve the project.

I think I did read somewhere that Gary Parsons is still writing one that spans both wars.

Do you have names? I searched the Australians who have died on 2 September 1918 and are buried at Assevillers, but didn't find burial return sheets referring to Barleux.

It's not uncommon that just a Grid Reference is detailed on Burial Return/Concentration.

Those noted buried at Barleux German Cemetery were recovered from GR 62c.N.12.d.7.6. Daniell, Hems, Jones, Lumsden and Woods (58th Bn).

Greet and Ross (60th Bn) and Vidler (26th Bn) were also recovered here.
