New Avenue

I have come across a new avenue for research into my Grandfather's war in Palestine from late 1916 onwards.

 

This hat is in the Horsepower Museum in Winchester and belonged to Grandpa, Major Pillinger, and it was gifted to the Museum along with much else in about 1978. I now believe it to be a Colonel or Brigadier on the Staff. Therefore I am now wondering if he was temporarily promoted to Hon. Colonel when he was serving in Palestine, I am guessing alongside Allenby. The photo below shows Grandfather, second from the right standing in the Garden of Gethsemane beside someone who looks very much like Allenby in 1917.

 

I am however floundering with this because of this term "Staff". Where do you go to research "The Staff"? Can anybody help me?
