Remembered Today:

'3 Emp Base Depot' - meaning of?

According to his B103, DH.9 pilot K. J. Gould in France is discharged from No 20 General Hospital at Camiers and posted to '3 Emp Base Depot' on 14 Nov 18.

Next day he is posted 1 Aeroplane Supply Depot at Marquise.

Is anyone able to please advise me what the 'Emp' might be an abbreviation for, also the Depot's location?

TIA,

Errol

Hi

I think it is No 3 Employment Base Depot I can't be certain but I believe that it was at Etaples

Many thanks Steve. Seems to have been a place for dealing with folk who were not physically up to active service standards. My man was there for only a day and later went on to serve as a pilot with 18 Squadron. Perhaps he was being checked out at the EBD or posted there in error.

According to Google the Depot was at Etaples in 1916. I've seen anything to suggest it moved elsewhere later.

Cheers,

Errol
