kin47 Posted 20 February , 2005 Share Posted 20 February , 2005 Hello Chris Not a lot: William James Fenn died of wounds or injuries on 13 Mar 18. He does appear in the "officers and men killed in action ledger" don don
Michael Lowrey Posted 20 February , 2005 Share Posted 20 February , 2005 Chris, HMT Eros, a vessel of 286 gross registry tons, sank on a mine SE of Aldeburgh/off Felixstowe on September 5, 1917. The Eros was built in 1907 and was a fishing vessel taken into naval service. The mine was apparently laid by the small German minelaying submarine UC 4. Sound like your man died of injuries six months after the sinking. Best wishes, Michael
Malcolm Posted 20 February , 2005 Share Posted 20 February , 2005 Strange one here. HMT EROS, hired trawler in Auxiliary Fleet, Admiralty No 698, Port No. GY.284 (Great Yarmouth), 286 tons, launched 1907, mine-sweeper, shown as mined 5th September 1917 off Felixstowe. service December 1914 to September 1917. I can't find any other EROS in Dittmar & Colledge. Aye Malcolm
kin47 Posted 20 February , 2005 Share Posted 20 February , 2005 Hello One rating was lost when EROS was sunk. From Fenn's listing in Officers and Men Killed in Action, he would have died of wounds in the sinking. Making a second rating lost in the sinking. don

Pte1643 Posted 13 March , 2005 Share Posted 13 March , 2005 Port No. GY.284 (Great Yarmouth) Just to clarify... A "GY" registration is a Grimsby registered vessel. Great Yarmouth vessels are "YH". Mark.

Pte1643 Posted 14 March , 2005 Share Posted 14 March , 2005 Aye, sorry I have no excuse. No problem Malcolm. It's an easy mistake, given the "seemingly obvious" initials. Mark... Errr... In Errr... Yarmouth.

Pte1643 Posted 14 March , 2005 Share Posted 14 March , 2005 Is that a Great place to live? You'll notice I left out the word "Great". Sad to say, with the current state of unemployment and need for regeneration and better transport links, it's not the place it used to be. Better than some places though, I s'pose. Pte1643 Posted 16 March , 2005 Share Posted 16 March , 2005 Not as good as Lowestoft though!!!!!! You in Lowestoft Chris? I work there, well Oulton Broad really. All the people I work with say the same. I just remark, that if you think Lowestoft is any better, then Spectacles and "Rose Tinted" spring to mind. Both places as bad as one another, IMO. In fact whole area not much better, Norwich is a nice City though. Anyway, I fear we have completely digressed from the original topic, shall stop now. Best Regards mate. Mark.
