LiverpoolLou Posted 17 June , 2020 Share Posted 17 June , 2020 Good morning, I'm researching hthe 10th Rifle Brigade action at Guillemont, 3rd Sept.,1916. Does anyone have a map of the attack please? Regards, Bill
WhiteStarLine Posted 17 June , 2020 Share Posted 17 June , 2020 Hi Bill, You may need the Unit War Diary depending on how much detail you want. The Official History has an overall situation map and if you search tmapper for Guillemont you can zoom into an overlayed National Library of Scotland trench map dated 3 SEP 1916 and at least follow the trench line. brianmorris547 Posted 17 June , 2020 Share Posted 17 June , 2020 (edited) Bill These two maps are from the WD of the Commander RE 20 Div. Map 1 shows the position of 10 RB. The 8 numbers in circles in map 2 were the objectives of 96 Field Company who went over the top with 59 Infantry Brigade. In the WD of 59 IB there is a report by the OC 96 FC which makes sense of the map. There are also other reports. stiletto_33853 Posted 17 June , 2020 Share Posted 17 June , 2020 Bill, If you put Guillemont in the search engine you will find that there is a fair bit of information on the forum regarding 3/9/16 20th Divisions attack. Andy
stiletto_33853 Posted 18 June , 2020 Share Posted 18 June , 2020 (edited) Various maps are available at different times of the attack. This is dispositions of units before the attack, 10th RB were by Arrow Head Copse. Andy Edited 18 June , 2020 by stiletto_33853
Don Regiano Posted 18 June , 2020 Share Posted 18 June , 2020 This photo was taken from A.6.b.2.8 in Andy's map above. It is looking over the top of what was Arrow Head copse towards the poplar trees of Guillemont Road cemetery. The track is still there (and passable) with the bend clearly visible. MBrockway Posted 18 June , 2020 Share Posted 18 June , 2020 (edited) I echo Andy's point above - we have posted a lot of material elsewhere on the Forum about 20th (Light) Division's capture of Guillemont, including maps and annotated photos. Somewhere there's even a photo of the other end of the track in Don R's photo above, where it joins the D64! Judicious use of the Forum search tool should turn these up easily.
