Paddy 60th Posted 7 June , 2020 Share Posted 7 June , 2020 (edited) During the last few weeks of lockdown I have been going through my collection of W.W.1 items and cataloguing them properly. One of the books I have is a copy of The Pilgrim's Guide To The Ypres Salient. On the title page there is a name wriitten in ink - Annie F David, 4 Oakfield St, Cardiff and a date - July 1920 . At the back of the book there is a list of cemeteries in the Salient and, presumably, Annie has underlined Bard Cottage Cemetery in Boesinghe. On looking at the cemetery records there is a grave to Capt. T W David of the Welch Regt. killed on 27th July 1917. He is obviously a relative of Annie, perhaps husband, father, son or brother. It looks like she may have visited the cemetery in 1920 or sometime after as she has also underlined directions in the book. I'd love to be able to find out more and wonder if anyone has any ideas as to how to go about it.The details on the CWGC site do not give any mention of relatves unfortunately. I suppose the cemetery Register/ Visitors book for the period is still held by the CWGC and i could always approach them as Annie may have left a comment in it. MaxD Posted 7 June , 2020 Share Posted 7 June , 2020 (edited) It was Mrs Annie Florence David who was the administratrix of his estate (Soldiers' Effects) - that may suggest his mother rather than his sister in that role although either could have visited.. Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 7 June , 2020 Share Posted 7 June , 2020 (edited) Well, the CWGC records for the headstone states that the inscription "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! R.I.P." was ordered by M.C.R. David Esq. 117 St. Mary's Street, Cardiff. 117 St. Mary's Street was formerly the NatWest Bank in the main shopping street of Cardiff in those days. Could be a typo by CWGC M.C.R.David instead of A.C.R. David ? It's definitely an 'M', but the typewriter is dodgy: Edited 7 June , 2020 by Dai Bach y Sowldiwr

Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 18 June , 2020 Share Posted 18 June , 2020 (edited) That's a shame. As far as I can see, digitized copies of the Western Mail only go up to 1900 on the Welsh Newspapers Online site Is the Western Mail available on BNA? clk Posted 18 June , 2020 Share Posted 18 June , 2020 Hi, Image sourced from post #8 above So he was killed just over a week after being promoted to Captain (in the war diary he is still noted as 'Lieut. T.W. DAVID' though), and less than a week after his brothers MC action. I guess that was a fortnight that the David family wouldn't forget. Try as I might, I could only find written reports on FMP. I did find a photograph on the Llanddulas and Rhyd-y-Foel Remembers website. https://www.llanddulasremembers.co.uk/captain-thomas-w-david.php Edited 18 June , 2020 by GWF1967

Paddy 60th Posted 6 July , 2020 Author Share Posted 6 July , 2020 Thank you very much everyone to the replies to my original post and sorry I haven't responded sooner. Again, the Forum has turned up trumps with the quality of information - amazing ! I can now add this to the copy of the book which personalises it. Thanks again
