Hazel Basford Posted 18 March , 2005 Share Posted 18 March , 2005 From c. August 1917 Gillies worked at the Frognal Hospital in Sidcup when it was decided to bring together the experts from all the Dominion countries in one place. Expansion was not possible at the Cambridge Hospital and they also wanted better surroundings. They found this at Sidcup in the extensive grounds surrounding Frognal House and proximity to the main railway line from Dover was another advantage. The site is now Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup. There is an extensive website describing the work of Gillies and others at Sidcup on http://website.lineone.net/~andrewbamji/ Prior to the establishment of the Sidcup hospital plastic surgery was also carried out at the Westcliffe Ear & Eye Hospital (Canadian), Folkestone from October 1915, transferred to the Ontario Hospital at Orpington in May 1917 and then to Sidcup. From May 1916 plastic surgery work was also done in London at 74 Brook St and 24 Norfolk St and some work appears to have continued there until the end of the War. Another hospital, described as the Maxillo-Facial Hospital, opened somewhere in London I think, in October 1916, for discharged men.
