Pipe-Major 7068 George Thom of the 1st Battalion, Black Watch in 1917/1918 and then later became Pipe-Major of the Depot in the early 1920s. On his medal index card in feint writing there is mention of him having been referred to as H.M. Thom and indeed in the 'Pipes of War' (Seton & Grant) he is recorded as 'Hugh Maxwell Thom'. Medal rolls for the Boer War have him as George Thom as do the ones for WW1. Confusingly however there is a also a 1921 newspaper article which refers to him as Pipe-Major H Thom. If anyone knows when and where he was born and died, I'd be grateful if you could advise because I've never managed to ascertain these details. And.....he wasn't the only Pipe-Major Thom. There was also Ayrshire man, Pipe-Major 240152 Andrew Thom (b.1867 to d.1945) who was P/M of the 1/5th Battalion and then the 2/4th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers during WW1. There have also been a number of pipers surnamed Thom in other regiments including the Scots Guards and Gordon Highlanders. Just checked Scotland's People and I see that he was born in 1881 in Longside, Aberdeenshire. Many thanks indeed. Appreciated. Cheers/Ron
