Can anyone help me my Great Grandfather Harry Baylis was killed in action in the 1st WW. I think he was killed 11th May 1915 and his name is on the Menin Gate in Belgium. However I was disturbed to find that his name is spelt Bayliss with a double s. I looked on the Commonweath War Graves site and found there is another Harry Baylis spelt correctly but he was in the Worcestershire Regiment. My father is sure he was in the Royal Warwickshires as he recognises the cap badge in a photo he has of him. If I could find a death certificate I could confirm age and home address as neither has an age besides his name. Was a death certificate issued if so was it by the army or the family at home?

Lin,

For info there are two Harry Baylis on Soldiers Died CD.

13TH Bn Gloucester Regt Died of wounds 5-4-18 from Lydney.

1/8TH Worcester Regt Killed in action 27-8-17 from Evesham.

Don't know if this is any good to you.

Bob.

Lin,

Yes death certificates were issued, the registers are held at The Family Records Centre (FRC), London. The death records include separate registers for the war dead of the First World War.

The death certificate will confirm his Regiment, Battalion, Army No. & Rank, Name , Age in Years (last Birthday) Country of Birth, Date of Death, Place of Death, Cause of Death (but not his home address). Copies of certificates can be obtained from the FRC or once you know the precise register details, by phone.

Some large reference libraries hold microfiche copies of the Births Marriage and Death Registers, which may include the WW1 death register, worth a check ?
