This is a photo of either:

The father - (George) Alfred Barratt (1864-1928) In 3 bn South Staffs some time pre ww1 (at 51 he re-enlisted as an RFA mess steward for a year and a bit in 1915) (Nothing known about his pre ww1 service)

The son - Thomas Herbert Barratt (1897-1916) who enlisted into the South Satffords in 1914 was transferred to 10 Bn Worcs and was killed in action on the Somme in 1916

Any ideas of the date of this photo gratefully received (nothing on back)

The son. WW1 era uniform but cannot say I am an expert. Father’s WW1 papers shows he declared previous service in 3rd VB Battalion South Staffs.VB = Volunteer Battalion. These were a precursor to the Territorial Force. So not full time service. Could be embodied (Called up) to serve if required.

The photo shows the son I think.  He’s dressed for walking-out (of barracks) and going by his appearance with a probable date of 1915, and very likely not that long before embarking for France and Flanders.  He’s wearing a 1905 pattern cap, an 08 web belt and has his puttees tied in a fashion popular with experienced soldiers and related to a technique of bandage wrapping that was taught in First Aid training.
