Although not a book, I have just received the 3 disc set from S&N Genealogy Supplies listing all the overseas deaths of Army & Navy personnel.

Generally pleased with the product, very easy to use, and although it will not replace 1837online, and, at the final price inc p&p of £32.45 it will take a bit of time to re-coop the cost instead of using 1837, but is definetely a bonus.

All images are digitally enhanced, in alphabetical order, printable black and white images of the original GRO microfiche.

I also have received my set of these disks and they have more details than the promotional blurb says...

As Andy has said, they contain reproductions of the GRO indices just as are available on '1837online' giving name, rank, number, unit/ship, year of death and death certificate ref number. If you use this site frequently, the disks may be a cheaper option for you - especially considering that the units purchased on 1837online have a short span of validity.

The disks are billed as "First World War Army, Army Officer and Navy War Deaths - Part of the S&N Overseas Births, Marriages and Deaths Series". However, this gives a slightly false impression.

It is true that the Army OR details cover only those who died overseas but the army officer and Royal Navy info covers those that died in the UK also. Interestingly, RND men who died overseas appear in the naval section and in the army OR section with two different death certificate reference numbers.

The 'Army OR' and 'Army Officers' sections also seems to include RAF.

Well worth considering a purchase if you are a heavy user of 1837online for WW1 look-ups.

Happy to look up any reference number for people wishing to order death certificates online (having the number saves you £4.50).

Terry,

Have just gone through some of the details you have mentioned above, quite amazing. Definetely an added bonus to these discs.
