Hi

I have a medal to a man killed atacking The Bowery which I believe is to North West of High Wood. Is there anything left to see of this feature and is it easy to find and reach?

The Bowery is 200m N of New Beaumont Rd, Map ref: 6219/25658. Map 7W (Barry Cuttell, 148 days on the Somme)

I can't find it at the moment. Let me know if you can please.

Regards

Martin

Wartime map showing the position of it; sorry it's not in colour.

The Bowery was used as an OP for 29th Division FOOs on 1st July.

Just read your post again - this Bowery is at Auchonvillers. What source do you have for the other one? What unit and what date are we talking about?

Is the bowery where the Beaumont Hamel cemetry is. Looking at the maps it seems to be but I am not sure.??

Thanks

Paul

No; I have marked it with a 'green dot' on the modern IGN map below. The Bowery was never replanted after WW1.

This is the approx position of The Bow marked on a modern IGN map with a green 'squiggle' (not a technical geographical term, I know). You can see you could walk to the area from High Wood or Martinpuich, or see it from the edge of the wood. Nothing on ground level today, but you will be able to see the lat of the land. This position was captured by units of 50th (Northumbrian) Division, by the way, on 15th September.
