DCLI Posted 17 February , 2005 Share Posted 17 February , 2005 I have just taken delivery of a very nice TFEM for a man in the 8th Mddx. On some of the paperwork, decoration entitlement, next to the various names under Remarks, depending on what happened to them there is: Discharged Demobilized Killed in Action Death Presumed Dis to Comm and my man - Disembodied What does this latter one mean? J T Gray Posted 17 February , 2005 Share Posted 17 February , 2005 Sounds horrible, doesn't it? All it means is that when you joined the TA yuo were "embodied" as a member of it, and thus "disembodied" when you left - a hang-over from something ancient, I suspect! Terry_Reeves Posted 23 February , 2005 Share Posted 23 February , 2005 When war was declared, the Territorial Force was embodied in the Regular Army, hence the term. Terry Reeves

The nearest equivalent would be "mobilisation of the complete unit". It did not happen to an individual except by virtue of his belonging to the unit at the time the unit was embodied. Before the TF, embodiment was also what happened when the Militia were required.
