Mick M Posted 2 May , 2020 Share Posted 2 May , 2020 George Edward Taplin joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 17.4.15 in Manchester, he was a labourer but only 5 ft 2 inch tall, assigned to 19th Battalion he arrived in France and from Depot looks like he was attached directly to 'RE 173rd tunnelling company.....on the page of his file below he is posted on 15.9.16 and returns 19.9......it doesn't say why is this a leave perhaps? Also I can't find the diary I'm searching in the French diaries under 173rd Tunnelling Company but this doesn't give me any tunnelling companies (finding diaries is a problem for me).....it obviously exists as I see another thread.....he was killed on 16.6.17 can someone have a nose for me please as to how he died...body was recovered and is in CWWGC site....ta... https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1219/31238_201572-00278?pid=1889240&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?dbid%3D1219%26h%3D1889240%26indiv%3Dtry%26o_vc%3DRecord:OtherRecord%26rhSource%3D2962&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.78109012.1954106544.1588353855-895296782.1588353855#?imageId=31238_201572-00280
brianmorris547 Posted 3 May , 2020 Share Posted 3 May , 2020 The WD for 173 Tunnelling Co RE for 01/03/1915 to 31/08/1917 is WO 95/335/5. It is not on Ancestry but can be downloaded from TNA. It does not name other ranks in 1916. Brian

Are you reading that correctly ? The entries are out of order but using the dates in the column after 'place' we have, as I read it: 8/7/16 attached 173 Tunnelling Co 27/8/16 Returned to Duty (ie with RWF) 15/9/16 To 173 Tunnelling Co Does this make more sense ?
