Hello,

I'm new to this Forum and would like to thank those responsible for allowing me to join in. My reason for joinning the Forum is because I'm interested in finding some answers to a few questions I have on pieces I've recently found in a collection in Ma. I have several items and would like to learn about them if possible. The first piece is, I believe, a French or German collar insignia, pinned on gray and red wool. The second item dates to before WWI. Its a patch with the inatials PHS with two US buttons on either side. The buttons are dated, July 27,1875. Can anyone help ID either piece? Thanks DanMy Webpage My Webpage

Bettcha "PHS" is Public Health Service.

They existed way back when and treated the American "Indians" and merchant marine.

In fact, there was an old PHS hospital in Norfolk, Va where I was stationed.

They also wore a uniform very much resembling the US Navy uniform at the time.

They are now called the USPHS, and, much attenuated, still exist.

Harry & DrB, Thanks for your help! PHS, Public Health Service, is the best answer yet! The buttons are dated 1875 and the patch does have a Navy appearance. I'll continue to reasearch in the PHS area. KoC hat badge? I'll look to see if I can find more info in the KoC area. Thanks again!
