313012, Flt Sgt, Percy Armitage, 47 Squadron, RAF.

Born Elland, 3 Aug 1892, son of Herbert & Mary Armitage.

Died Elland, May 1980, aged 88.

Am seeking to positively id a photograph in my possession which is believed to be that of Flt Sgt Percy Armitage!

Mr Armitage, a Carpenter and Joiner, of Elland, Yorkshire, entered the Royal Navy, 12 Mar, 1912, transferring to the RNAS 12 Oct, 1915 and finally to the RAF, 1st Apr, 1918.

Served with 47 Squadron, South Russia from 15th Jun, 1919 to 21st Jun, 1920.

Recipient of the following awards etc -

MSM (South Russia) - "Immediate Award' Presented 28 Oct, 1919, by G.O.C., B.M.M.

British War Medal.

Victory Medal.

Russian Silver Medal of St George, 4th Class, 710853 - (For Valour).

Russian Silver Medal of St Anne (For Devotion to Duty).

Mentioned in Despatches.

King's Certificate No. 4168. (Honourable Discharge, 20th Sep, 1920).

On leaving the RAF it appears Mr Armitage returned to Elland and to his occupation as Carpenter & Joiner (self employed?).

It seems he married Aug, 1926 (Elland) and is believed to have had two children.

Last known to be residing in Elland.

He must have had a story to tell!  Can anyone from Elland, or elsewhere, recall this gentleman?

Rob

Percy features in several online trees on ancestry. None of the public ones show a photo of him, but if you contact the private ones they may be a closer relation & have a photo.

Thanks travers61 - Google search seems to lead me to others with that Christian name, and with differing birth years.  Will certainly take a look at Ancestry.

Have been informed that the wife of Mr Armitage may have been named Florence!

Update.

A glance at the Ancestry website confirms the wife of Percy Armitage was named Florrie (Brumpton).  Mrs Armitage passed away in 1954.

Mr Armitage, as before mentioned, passed away in May 1980 and was interred Elland Cemetery and not St Mary Elland (latter seemingly closed to Burials in the 18th-century).
