A seven digit number indicates ww2

What name and number are impressed on the  14 star BWM and VM ?

Is it this man? If so, there’s an erroneous “2” on the end of the number you’ve quoted.

Name: John M Crosby

Regimental Number: 253845

Regiment: Royal Engineers

Battalion: 4 Divisional Signal Company

Rank: Corporal

Medals: Military Medal

It is, John M Crosby 253845  2nd CPL

that's where the erroneous 2 has crept in

MM listed Edinburgh Gazette March 17 1919 HERE

No you are correct

His service number is 253845   (2nd Cpl RE) = 2nd Corporal Royal Engineers)

you inadvertently added the 2 to his service number in your initial post

hope this clarifies things
