Remembered Today:

Haig Hutments, Crookham

Hello all.

A line in the records of an officer reads - Aw'd No 21 O.C.B. Haig Hutments, Crookham. Does anyone know what this means or have any information about this officer-training establishment?

Thanks

Jon.

Do you have any further details, like a county?

I live near Newbury,Berks, and we have a Crookham about 5 miles away.

I know the area, especially Crookham Common and Greenham Common, which is virtually next door to it,were used for training and manouveres before and during WW1 and as camps or staging points, and i vaguely remember there being a private, boarding school at Crookham, which may have been used for training officers, but it is a very vague recollection.

All the best.

Simon.

Thats Hampshire,on the other side of Basingstoke.

It is close to Blackbushe airfield,i think.

Off to the web.

This name rimgs a big bell.

Got a feeling Church Crookham had an aerodrome at some point,or something.

All the best.

Simon.

If anyone Is still interested, I am writing up a soldier whose Army File clearly states he was sent "to 21 Offr. Cadet Bn. Haig Hutments, Crookham, Hants" on 7.6.17

Haig Lines/Hutments was at Church Crookham in Hampshire. I don't know who was stationed there but by 1976 only a few married quarters were being used. I lived in one for a year. It was an ex- officers quarter but they had been downgraded to 'sub-sub standard' so the rent was very low and it was hard and expensive to heat. They were totally demolished in the early 80's and the whole area is now housing.

Farnborough and Odiham are near Church Crookham.

Will check my spelling next time.
