for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. whilst returning from the enemy line with a patrol he noticed a party of about forty of the enemy coming to take up night outpost dispositions. though they were ten times the strength of his patrol, he waited for them and attacked them, inflicting heavy casualties and scattering them. he then most skilfully withdrew his patrol and brought it back without casualties. he showed the greatest enterprise and marked ability to command.
