larneman Posted 14 February , 2005 Share Posted 14 February , 2005 I came across this letter in the "Times" today when travelling on the train to Amsterdam. Can anybody supply a bit more information on J.M. Edmonds, Dr. Freddy Brittain or the Kohima Memorial. Also how is this "epitagh" often misquoted. gem22 Posted 14 February , 2005 Share Posted 14 February , 2005 Liam Kohima is on the border between India and Burma (as it was) and was the site of one of the most famous battles of world war 2. It was to WW2 what Ypres was to WW1. If the British Army had lost that battle then the Japanese would have, probably, taken India. Today, in memory of the men who fought, and those who died, in Burma, they are remembered by their comrades. It is done in the form of the 'Kohima' prayer which has slightly adapted the saying mentioned in the paper. The prayer is recited as: ' When you go home tell them of us and say- For your tomorrow's we gave our today.' Garth
