OLD ROBIN HOOD Posted 12 April , 2020 Share Posted 12 April , 2020 Greetings from a very warm Sherwood Forest. Here are 2 Sherwood Forester cap badges which are a little different to most. I refer to them as "belt and braces". Not only do they have a slider but lugs as well. I think that they are of Great War period. One, as can be seen, was made by J.R. Gaunt. These are not the only two that I have come across, over the years I have seen about 10. It will be noticed that on one badge the lugs are on the Maltese cross and on the other on the scroll. The question that I have often asked is 'Why would they have these 2 methods of attachment?' If anyone out there can enlighten me I would be most interested. Keep safe and Well Old Robin Hood
FROGSMILE Posted 12 April , 2020 Share Posted 12 April , 2020 (edited) I’ve never seen such a thing before and am as puzzled as you are. It’s difficult to come to any conclusion as to what they might be for, beyond perhaps two different types of regimental headdress. Yes, I was thinking the Field Service Cap and perhaps the General Service Cap (WW2). Edited 12 April , 2020 by FROGSMILE
max7474 Posted 19 April , 2020 Share Posted 19 April , 2020 The Gaunt mark is a 1970's fake. The lugs are all spuious.

It seems a strange thing to create with the intent to falsify given that most collectors research their badges.

I used to collect throughout the 70s, but haven’t done so since then whilst retaining my collection for the BEF 1914.
