Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 11 April , 2020 Share Posted 11 April , 2020 Dear Great War Forum Aficionados, Dudley Stafford Cook was a smooth character. Handsome, son of a (knighted) Mayor of Bristol, Solicitor, and a Gloucestershire Regiment officer - before departing for Nigeria Political Service. The First War found D. S. Cook in Nigeria, where he made himself useful - being loaned from the Nigerian Political to the Military from time to time. 1) Could any kind soul please beam me a coloured copy example of his MIC? 2) Why was his 15 Star impressed 'Capt., Glouc, R.' - rather than, say, 'Lieut., attd. W.A.F.F.' He was a Major (since defunct Elstow School Roll), yet his BWM and Victory are impressed CAPTAIN. His 1935 Jubilee Medal was probably on the strength of his having served briefly as Acting Resident, Nigeria Political Service, at Lagos Kindest regards, Kim. The Inspector Posted 12 April , 2020 Share Posted 12 April , 2020 (edited) Hi Kim, Don't know if this helps...... The Gloucester medal award roll for the Star shows him as Capt. however the roll is annotated "See 1914/15 Star Roll HD Qrs NIGERIA R COL/5/40 page 3 " which is also shown on his MIC. It is quite clear that the medal should have T/Lieut. inscribed, as per page 3, and not Capt. There are a lot of amendments on the aforementioned record so perhaps that's when the mistake was made. At the top of the page is written in red ink "Extracted from Col/5/40". The page is dated" October, 1920. Place Kaduna." Regards Barry Ancestry has T/Lieut transcribed as Transport Lieutenant.! Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 12 April , 2020 Author Share Posted 12 April , 2020 (edited) Dear Barry, Thanks - as always (you deserve an immediate MBE)! Perhaps a generous GWF member could beam me the 1914/15 Star Roll HD Qrs NIGERIA R COL/5/40 page 3 . I also still need a colour copy of the D. S. Cook Medal Index Card (this is tantamount to begging. Sorry!)... Perhaps all concerned thought Capt., Glouc. R. was better than the alternative? Kindest regards, Kim.
