Faz Posted 5 April , 2020 Author Share Posted 5 April , 2020 The pic of whole helmet.looks like it's really rusty, but it's actually the paint.its a very solid shell.the bales look a bit greenish tinge, would they have been brass over painted.looked up stamping. manufacture, steel producer, heat stamp batch.can any one put a date to it.think its had a thin coat of white paint at one time.Brush strokes all over. I believe the “D” is the manufacturer, James Dixon & Son’s Sheffield (1915). The F45 is the heat (batch) no. The manufacturer may not have been the steel maker, they may have been supplied with steel from another company.
Faz Posted 5 April , 2020 Author Share Posted 5 April , 2020 Think the F is steel manufactor.Thomas Firth and Son.and the 45 is the Heat stamp batch number. Can anyone date it,tested it today and its non magnetic,so not a very early one.?
Faz Posted 6 April , 2020 Author Share Posted 6 April , 2020 Hi calling all people in the know, any one got an idea on date of my Brodie.and any suggestion on what to do with it.really think might leave paint and just fit repro liner.
peregrinvs Posted 7 April , 2020 Share Posted 7 April , 2020 (edited) Circa 1916-18. I’m not sure if it’s possible to be more precise. If it were mine, I would probably just give it a very gentle wash and then wipe it over with oil when dry. I have a shell in not dissimilar condition: https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/249033-a-magnetic-attraction/ I haven’t done anything to it other than gently clean it as I didn’t think a repro liner would add anything. Faz Posted 7 April , 2020 Author Share Posted 7 April , 2020 Thanks for your advise, sounds like good advise.what oil would I use.thanks.mark.
peregrinvs Posted 7 April , 2020 Share Posted 7 April , 2020 Ordinary lubricating oil will do. Rub on with a cloth, and then rub off the excess with another. This will hopefully remove any loose rust.

Faz Posted 9 April , 2020 Author Share Posted 9 April , 2020 Been examining my helmet a bit more closely,it appears to be writing under the white paint.this is a rough drawing of what I can make out. Some more pics.
