Remembered Today:

William "Scotty" Walton in the Black Watch?

William Douglas Walton, born Carluke Scotland 23.4.1897, had WW1 service in a Scottish Regiment, believed to be the Black Watch, and had WW2 service with the Australian forces.

I have just now obtained his Attestation Form at the time of WW2 enrolment.

To the question: "Give details of previous military history" he answered (in 1940):

Other military service: Yes, 7 years

No: 7407

Rank: Sjt

Unit: Black Watch.

I am looking to confirm this.

How best can I confirm, examine further, his Black Watch involvement?

Pictures of William "Scotty" Walton in uniform appeared in the "Arms/Insignia/etc forum in late Jan led by Derek Robertson under the heading: "Another Scottish Uniform to Identify"

So welcome your suggestions.

Tim,

Well done mate! Brilliant.

Now we have to resolve why "Scotty" appears to be wearing the uniform of the HLI at Hawick @ 1914 and a Cameronian cap badge was in the possession of his family?

See WALTON STORY so far

Great work guys, and your discovery Tim.

I will order a copy of William "Watson"'s record. In due course (I don't know how long it will take to receive same) I will post the result.

Regards,

Grahame

  • 3 weeks later...

Scotty was rumoured to have won the D.C.M and M.M but his MIC doesn't show either.

If he had been awarded these medals I'm confident that their award would have been shown on his MIC?

Hi Derek,

I've only ever come across one Walton who won the MM with the Black Watch in the Great War.

S-43311 L/Cpl. Andrew Walton, 8th R.Highrs.

Formerly 4310, R.Highrs.

All the best,

Derek
