dink999 Posted 28 March , 2020 Share Posted 28 March , 2020 I am struggling to find this man and his parents on any census records that they should be recorded on. His service record on Ancestry here is extensive and gives a number of clues:- Enlisted in 1902 aged 18 Born Battersea, Surrey Parents Stephen and Elizabeth Blackpool Put on the Army Reserve in 1910 He married Maud Stoneman on 8th May 1916 in Cheltenham, Glos I have found him recorded on the Electoral Rolls as residing in Cheltenham in 1914 and 1915. I have also found a Railway Employment Record that could be him, stating a date of birth of 3rd July 1884. I cannot find a birth record covering that date, the only one that comes close is for the Sep. qtr of 1885 Brackpool Stephen Thomas E. Grinstead 2b 147 But it is definitely not the right man he has records showing that he joined the RAF. I'm hoping some fresh eyes will crack this little mystery. Here is an image of Stephen from my collection, 2 small sections of his papers courtesy of Ancestry and that Railway record also from Ancestry Thank in advance Dave

clk Posted 28 March , 2020 Share Posted 28 March , 2020 (edited) Hi Dave, What I think is his previous militia attestation of 3rd February 1902 is on Findmypast - link. At that time it seems that he declared his age as 17 years, and 3 months old. He also said that he had been living at 124 Wycliffe Road, Battersea for the last twelve months. Whilst I can find that address in the 1911 census (he's not there at that time), I'm having a bit of difficulty finding it in the 1901 census. I also noted that he appears to have signed his name as Blackpoole, so I guess that be a slight twist. Mark1959 Posted 28 March , 2020 Share Posted 28 March , 2020 (edited) There is an address of 47 Beaufoy Road, Battersea on his 1902 attestation. Plus the 124, Wycliffe Road on his militia attestation. Looked at electoral roll for these streets. Then found a name in the electoral roll to search in the 1901 census. In both cases there is no family with names remotely like those he declares. Beaufoy Road is occupied by several families. Wycliffe by the Bignells. Blackpool I am assuming is an alias. Suggests he may be underage in 1902. He does declare a brother William. No trace of a Stephen Snr either. davidbohl Posted 28 March , 2020 Share Posted 28 March , 2020 He could have been out of the country in 1911, a passenger record:- Dave Stephen Blackpool Immigration May 1909 Quebec City, Quebec, Canada Male 24 1885 England Dominion
dink999 Posted 28 March , 2020 Author Share Posted 28 March , 2020 Thanks for the details on the addresses, looking again at the images I posted there appear to be 2 more addresses, 67 or 69 Tennyson St, London SW and playing with the 2nd image it looks like the Prince of Wales mansions, London. Just wondered if Chris or Mark might have some better knowledge than me of these places Thanks Dave
Mark1959 Posted 28 March , 2020 Share Posted 28 March , 2020 Again the Tennyson St addresses are multi-occupancy. No sign In1901 census of someone likely to be the brother William.
