Remembered Today:

The National Archives - Digitised War Diaries etc

On the TNA website, the following attached information is provided:

It says that if you are on-site (in a reading room) you can view and download digital documents or email copies to your own device.

So if I were interested in a War Diary that has already been digitised, can I download the whole diary? Download it to what? Do I take a USB stick?

The alternative seems to allow me to email the document to myself - again, I assume the whole document - is that correct?

Regards

Russ

A lot of these digitised files are too large to e-mail them to yourself if you use an e-mail with restricted size per e-mail. TNA will not allow a USB stick to be used on their computers for fear of a virus. A lot take small laptops and download to their hard drives. Also the £3.50 a file is somewhat misleading as a units war diary may span over many files, the worst I have seen is one page but others will hold a considerable amount.

I have recently been downloading some Corps Diaries where regularly there are five to seven files for one month for just one branch say HQ, makes it expensive.

I was at Kew a couple of years ago, and I took my own laptop.

You log into the TNA network and download whatever you want.

Any War Diary that's been digitised can be downloaded free.

Whole diaries, part diaries, whatever.
