Listening to this podcast: 

https://www.historyextra.com/period/first-world-war/death-kitchener-world-war-one-mystery-when/ I learned that David Lloyd George was scheduled to travel on the HMS Hampshire with Kitchener on its ill fated voyage. However plans were changed after the Easter rebellion in Dublin and Asquith requested DLG to stay home and try to resolve the Home Rule issue....
