Why the differance in records...

Continuing my research of the Tower Hill Monument I came across the following.

I have discovered how bad the records are in the CWGC for the Merchant Seamen mentioned on the Monument are. I am wondering about the records on the Scottish Database concerning merchant seamen . See the following....

2 men from the same merchant ship died the same day. One was in the RN and the other in the MN. Why the differance in the records.

Surname SMITH

Firstname H S G

Service number

Date of death 15/09/1918

Decoration

Place of birth Dundee

Other

SNWM roll THE MERCANTILE MARINE

Rank 1st Mate

Theatre of death "KENDAL CASTLE" 131282.

Surname CRUICKSHANK

Firstname Alexander Raffan

Service number 7364

Date of death 15/09/1918

Decoration

Place of birth

Other

SNWM roll THE ROYAL NAVY

Rank Acting Bombardier

Theatre of death R.M.A. S.S. "KENDAL CASTLE".

Also what does the number mean or refer to after the ships name.

Hi Liam,

I know the Mercantile Marine list was made up later then the Royal Navy one. I don;t know what the number after the name means but why not email the secretary and ask. His contact is on the auto-responder on the first page.

The number after the ship's name is its OFFICIAL NUMBER given when the ship was registered at whatever port.

Ths no. is necessary when seeing what records the Newfoundland Maritime Museum has when using the NMM online search.

ID number

(1) See what's on the internet.

(2) Go to nearest Library which has Lloyd's Registers for 1914 etc.

And it's KATH.

I have searched the internet, plenty of search possiblities for everything but British Vessel Numbers.

Have not located one in my part of Europe yet and the North Sea is to cold for a swim. Will give Amsterdam a call on Monday. Wonder what the closes British Library is to Ymuiden.

Sorry about that KATH but the "E" on my keyboard is so close to the "H" .<grin>

Liam.

PS: We do not all live in the UK.....

Wonder what they called the gunnery fellows on armed merchant vessels?

Thanks Kath.

Amsterdam is the main "port" near to me. About 40 km away.
