Remembered Today:

Lanyard

Hi. I noticed a query on here about the left shoulder lanyard. I would appreciate any info on

this picture of my granddad, George S Bell. (1893-1975)  Born in Forfar or Dundee, Angus.

Unfortunately didn't get much info about his time during WW1.

I think he was in the Gordon Highlanders and imprisoned at St Quentin. I wondered about the white lanyard, as I

assumed he was just a private ? Any info would be great thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to the forum.

He is a private, no stripes on his upper sleeve.

The lanyard was worn by most soldiers from all regiments, usually a pocket knife was attached to it.

I hope this helps.

Good view of the GORDON shoulder title.

What info do you have on him?

Where did you get that he was in the Gordon Highlanders?

Looking more closely at the title I can see CAMERON, I think??

What do others think, or is it just my eyes?

Now I am a bit confused. Hoping to get more info from my cousin soon.

His favourite phrase was, 'Good Gordon Highlanders', rather than 'good God' !

He lived in Forfar, Angus. The house was called 'Gordon House', the Zoar, Forfar.

A bit slim. I know, but all I have to go on. I recall seeing a telegram (in the 60s) informing

Mrs Bell, (wife possibly mother) that he was a prisoner in St Quentin, France, but unfortunately

it was lost when my parents died.

Here is an example of the style of lanyard your Granddad wore. This belonged to Pte Latzmann (AKA Salzmann) of the East Surrey regiment he attached it along with other badges from his service to his Derby Scheme Armband .

Regards

Mark
