KernelPanic Posted 15 February , 2020 Share Posted 15 February , 2020 Did commercial photographers work in France and Flanders to produce postcards of soldiers? I have two postcards of my great grandfather. They are outdoor shots of him on horseback taken by H. Batty, a commercial photographer from Clacton who apparently styled himself as a ‘Photographic Artist’. My GGF was with the 50th (Northumbrian) Divisional Train in Flanders during 1915. Because of their provenance I've assumed the photos were taken in the Clacton area, although when or why the 50th Division ASC would have be there in 1915 I don’t know; maybe pre-posting training? The Division was posted to France in April 1915. So I’m wondering if the photos could have been taken in France/Flanders? I notice that many field postcards have the embossed mark of a professional photographer or index numbers similar to the ones on my GGF’s photographs, hence my question.
