Remembered Today:

Prayer & Hymn Book

Have any of you seen one of these before? It's the Book of Common Prayer and Hymns Ancient & Modern. It's too big (thick) to be something that an individual carried in his pocket so I am guessing that it was half inched from a church service.  It dates from 1916/1917.

It can only date from 1917 at best, as it has the SW1 London area code in the address that wasn't introduced until that year:

Could be a larger edition for chaplain's / padre's use?

Yes, it could be.

As it contains the order for making and ordaining of bishops, priests and deacons it is almost certainly a clergy copy. Most such books would not have contained these Services for space/size reasons. It isn’t something that one would use everyday.

Not from him. Likely to be from Holifield (I have posted about him previously).

Thank you.  P

Edit. Just looked up your thread on Holifield. Interesting character.

Yes.

Off on a tangent but it's my thread so I can do what I like:  Cecil Holifield's granddaughter's god father was John Dunlop who was in 3 RTR and from late 44 onwards an OC.

Now, back to the hymn book. How many were printed?

I have a couple of these. I understand the various Bible Societies of whom there were dozens, presented a copy to each man who wanted one, so a lot.

Thank you. Who put the "Official Copy" stand on them?

The one embossed on the outside front? That would have to be the binders - I'm not sure anyone else would have had the necessary kit.
