Staff Officer's cap badges

Morning all

I figured no group is going to be better qualified to answer er this one! I've seen plenty of pictures of staff officers and they seem to favour the embroidered cap badge but I've also seen for sale a bronzed OSD cap badge, the latter of which I have to yet to see on a Great War photo. Does anyone have any observations about where, when and if bronzed badges might have been seen?1158061330_SOcap01.jpg.e0c394ed34a3f3960556620d2bdf6bc9.jpg

I’d just like to second Pete’s explanation.  Staff officers badges were always in bullion wire.

Hello.

I believe Staff Officers also wore bronze badges, as per the OP badge.

There are a couple of threads on the badge forum working out which badge is which for the General Staff or the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry.

You’re right Chris.  Now that I look at that IWM photo I can recall many other examples.  Well said!

Thanks Chris, I stand corrected. I notice he is wearing "Rifles" buttons as well, great photo.  Pete.

Here is gt g'father wearing bullion cap badge (1st WW - RA Staff Capt)

But somewhere I have g'father's (2nd WW) bullion, OSD and grandmother's sweetheart ?gold version to boot

I assume that they had OSD versions in 1st WW too.

I think this one is RDY. Apparently the position of the "inner" hind leg is a key indicator. No gap = Devonshires.
