Buffnut453 Posted 31 January , 2020 Share Posted 31 January , 2020 Lt Col Louis Arbon Strange's memoir "Recollections of an Airman" contains a couple of photos showing an inspection of the 51st Wing, Royal Air Force, at Spich Aerodrome, Germany, by Lieutenant General Sir William Robertson, Major General John Salmond and Brigadier General John Becke. The date likely falls somewhere between 7 May 1919, when Salmond took over RAF Rhine, and 25 July 1919 when squadrons of the 51st Wing were dispersed. Is there any way to identify the specific date of the event? The contemporaneous 11 Sqn records don't mention any such inspection. Do any experts out there know of any sources that might provide the specific date(s) of the event? Perhaps a diary from on of the Generals involved? Any advice would be very gratefully received. Many thanks, Mark
Uncle George Posted 31 January , 2020 Share Posted 31 January , 2020 Robertson became a Lieutenant General in October 1915, and became a General in June 1916.

Mea culpa, although Lt Gen is the rank given in the photograph caption in "Recollections of an Airman".

Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so smartarseish: but if the photo shows Robertson as a Lieutenant General (if you can see his insignia) then they must be inspecting something else. The image quality isn't good enough to distinguish insignia - to be honest, it's hard to pick out the individuals involved. However, there's no doubt about the location and the general timeframe. Robertson was CinC British Army of the Rhine and Salmond was in command of RAF Rhine, so an inspection by them makes sense during the early summer of 1919.
