Alyssum was minesweeping Jan/Feb 1916 and was part of the 10th Sloop Flotilla based on the Humber so was not as far as I know on escort duties. Wallington was the shore base for the Humber and if you look at his service record you will see Alyssum 5/12/15 - 25/2/16 & then Wallington ["] 26/2/16 - 20/12/16. This means that he was on the accounts of Wallington but still serving in Alyssum from 26/2/16 - 20/12/16. There is nothing on his record to show that he was on boom defence, possibly you have mistaken the AB notation for boom defence? The AB is when he became an Able Seaman.

On the night of 10th/11th February 1916 Alyssum was minesweeping off Dogger Bank with three other sloops, Arabis, Buttercup, & Poppy when they were attacked by German torpedo boats resulting in the sinking of Arabis. If you Google Arabis it will give you more detail about the attack.

ARABIS.

From 1917 he was a seaman on two old cruisers (Euryalus & Sapphire) patrolling the Gulf of Aden - bording & inspecting merchant ships and escorting the odd convoy.

If you have a full copy of his Service Record it may be worth you posting it as an image. We can then help you with any other information.

Also Google is your friend in trying to research each individual ship in WW1.

Hi thank you for your post. I have googled and have pictures of the ships he was on, but I wanted to know where those ships were when he was on them and what they were doing. Printout of record is dreadful, so have typed it up myself as best I can, posted herewith. Thank you for your interest and any help you can give,

Thank you, I have details of the ships but not what they were doing/where they were during the dates grandad was on them. That is the information I was hoping to get.

Log books for some of his ships are here:-

HMS SAPPHIRE - http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-05-HMS_Sapphire.htm

HMS NORTHBROOK  -  http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-75-RIMS_Northbrook.htm  (but note that while borne on the books of NORTHBROOK he was actually at RN Depot Bombay (presumably awaiting passage back to SAPPHIRE).

HMS EURYALUS -  http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-05-HMS_Euryalus.htm

HMS BERWICK  -  http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-05-HMS_Berwick.htm

HMS EDINBURGH CASTLE -  http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-08-HMS_Edinburgh_Castle.htm

HMS GRAFTON  -  http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-05-HMS_Grafton.htm

His disciplinary record of cells and detention is pretty bad!

Wow so much and I have obviously not been looking in the right places, I really do thank you.

yes he does seem to have been naughty, but he was born dec 1897, so he was so young.

Some more help please if possible. I am working my way through grandads record and on 23rd July 17 he was at Pembroke 1 which was shore base in Chatham.kent.

on 24 July he was on Euryalus but according to the log for that day it was at Port Said.
how can this be?

Beware!! The record does not show where he was "at" on any date. It actually shows in which ship he was borne for pay and admin purposes. In this case, it is likely that his final days/weeks 'on the books' of HMS PEMBROKE I (Chatham Barracks) were spent in transit to Port Said and that he actually joined that ship on 24 July.

Thank you, that would make more sense. Been trying to think how he could have got there overnight especially in 1917. Well now I can keep going and look at his record in a different way. So pleased I joined this forum, you have been wonderful in putting me on the right road.

Just a little bit more help please. Have all the details of ships now from logs, both as given above and having been to the national archives at Kew yesterday, but can’t get any information as to why grandad had detention.. ie what did he do. Also couldn’t find out why he was invalided out at R.N. hospital Chatham. Anyone know where I might be able to find records. They are not kept at Kew.

His cause of invaliding is on his ADM 188 ledger record (last entry) but to me it is unreadable "Shore Invalided. ****  **** ?) It is unlikely to be found elsewhere.

The reasons for his two terms of detention are also there: in 1918 "Disobedience" and in 1920 "Absent and Disobey" [sic].

Thank you. Thought might be able to expand as to what he did. 1920 found ratings given leave and one arrived 7 hours late. Guess that could have been grandad then, would probably been noted as absent. 90 days does seem a lot for that though. Did look at record and was able to bring up much larger, and yes unreadable still.

It was probably the associated wilful disobedience of orders 'wot did for him': absence and disobedience could both earn a sentence of detention. Absence could be made more serious if the ship was under sailing orders.

Thank you, you have been wonderful with all the help you have given me. Can finish typing up with what I found yesterday and give my uncle (his son) a copy, I know he has been as excited as me. Regards Lilian

I read it as "Diseases of skin".

In the insanitary conditions obtaining on some ships the most likely thing would be scabies; but, without the Medical Officer's journal, it's impossible to confirm.

Thank you, that would make sense now. When abroad.. don’t know where, it was said that he was bitten by an insect that was eating away at his face. His face was very scarred, I had never noticed the scars until it was pointed out to me when I was about 22.
