I have copy of his record as follow Impregnable boy11 aug 13 36 hours ganges. Aug 13-jun14 grafton. Boy 1 jun 14-aug 14 pembroke 1. Aug 14-sept 14 edinburgh castle Sep 14-dec 14 berwick Dec 14-nov 15 pembroke 1. Nov 15-dec15 alyssum. Ord sea. Dec 15-feb 16 escort duty wallington Feb 16-dec16. Boom defence pembroke 1. Dec 16-jul 17 euryalus. Jul 17-Oct 17 sapphire. Oct 17-jun 18 northbrook rnd Bombay jun18 East Indies stn sapphire. Jun18-nov 18 egmont Ssv. Nov 18-jan 19 he continued in navy until 6.6.23 when he was invalided out at rn hospital Chatham. Any help greatly appreciated. ARABIS Posted 28 January , 2020 Share Posted 28 January , 2020 Alyssum was minesweeping Jan/Feb 1916 and was part of the 10th Sloop Flotilla based on the Humber so was not as far as I know on escort duties. Wallington was the shore base for the Humber and if you look at his service record you will see Alyssum 5/12/15 - 25/2/16 & then Wallington ["] 26/2/16 - 20/12/16. This means that he was on the accounts of Wallington but still serving in Alyssum from 26/2/16 - 20/12/16. There is nothing on his record to show that he was on boom defence, possibly you have mistaken the AB notation for boom defence? The AB is when he became an Able Seaman. On the night of 10th/11th February 1916 Alyssum was minesweeping off Dogger Bank with three other sloops, Arabis, Buttercup, & Poppy when they were attacked by German torpedo boats resulting in the sinking of Arabis. I am working my way through grandads record and on 23rd July 17 he was at Pembroke 1 which was shore base in Chatham.kent. on 24 July he was on Euryalus but according to the log for that day it was at Port Said. how can this be? Beware!! The record does not show where he was "at" on any date. It actually shows in which ship he was borne for pay and admin purposes. In this case, it is likely that his final days/weeks 'on the books' of HMS PEMBROKE I (Chatham Barracks) were spent in transit to Port Said and that he actually joined that ship on 24 July. Have all the details of ships now from logs, both as given above and having been to the national archives at Kew yesterday, but can’t get any information as to why grandad had detention.. ie what did he do. Also couldn’t find out why he was invalided out at R.N. hospital Chatham. Anyone know where I might be able to find records. They are not kept at Kew. It is unlikely to be found elsewhere. The reasons for his two terms of detention are also there: in 1918 "Disobedience" and in 1920 "Absent and Disobey" [sic]. Thought might be able to expand as to what he did. 1920 found ratings given leave and one arrived 7 hours late. Guess that could have been grandad then, would probably been noted as absent. 90 days does seem a lot for that though. When abroad.. don’t know where, it was said that he was bitten by an insect that was eating away at his face.
