Remembered Today:

Last word in sentence.

Does anyone have any idea of the last word in this sentence? It is at the bottom right corner of a page and a new day's entry of a diary starts on the other side, so there is no continuation.

"Anyhow we must trust our leaders to know what is for the best ... " I am thinking possibly "I suppose"?

Hi

The s does not look the same as the others, but it could be I suppose...

regards

"Anyhow we must trust our leaders to know what is for the best, I gather" doesn't make sense to me.

I read it as 'suppose', which fits in with the rather resigned tone of the sentence. The writer is forcing the letters to fit at the end of the line and page.

'I guess' is American usage rather than British.

My first reading without much difficulty was "I suppose" - a bit squeezed into the end of the line. (I can see why it might be read as "I gather" - but on looking more carefully still go for "I suppose".) Are there words which begin with s or g elsewhere in the text?

"I suppose" for me too. Wouldn't a "g" on gather have a long tail similar to the the 'y" on anyhow?

Thanks everyone. I'll go with "suppose" especially if I can find another use.
